Printmaking/Monotypes

Printmaking, like living, is easiest if one flows with the process.
As with our evolving selves, images are created one upon the other, erasing part of the past, with traces that remain.

The printing press extends the artist’s capabilities, adding a detailed richness that complicates even the simplest compositions.
Monotypes emerge as a refreshing surprise, only partly as intended. The best part often better than imagined.

The artist must accept only limited control; Grace is wonderful!

Recent Effort:

This past year has marked a wonderful turning point, as I have moved from printing exclusively at the DeCordova, to opening Carriage House Press, along with my friend and colleague, KD Mernin. Both KD and I have gained immeasurably under the artistic direction of our teacher, Marty Epp.

Although my work always begins intuitively, I have been reaching toward a more considered creation of single images, rather than working serially. I have also been striving to obtain images that are deliberately 3 dimensional, without losing the fresh, spontaneous, richness that is my favorite aspect of any monotype. I continue to draw from natural imagery, although less often using simple plant materials, and find my work seeking to depict the Spirit embodied within each natural element – connecting the prints to each other, and to the age-old Creation story.
